Maverick 88 Magazine Follower Problem

Just got my Maverick 88 20 gauge from Dick's Sporting Goods. Took it to the range and could not get any shells in the magazine, so I put through some shells as a single shot, which worked fine. I did take the bird-shooting dowel out so that's not the problem.

Came home and tried to load the magazine with some dummy shells, still no luck. With my thumb I can only depress the magazine follower about half an inch, then it won't budge. Obviously it's still under warranty so sending it back is no problem. But I read online that someone had the same problem after having the gun for a few years. My question is whether to take the free repair and have Mossberg probably replace the plastic magazine follower, or bite the bullet and have a gunsmith put in a metal replacement and hope this problem is fixed once and for all. The Maverick 88/Mossberg magazine tubes are notoriously hard to take off, so I don't have the confidence to do this myself. But if anybody has a fix for this that doesn't have me putting the gun in some kind of vise and torquing the magazine off, I'm all ears.

There is frequently crud/debris in a newly manufactured gun unfortunately. The mag tube isn't very hard to remove, you just need to warm up the receiver where it threads in because they put Loctite or something similar on the threads. Any time we get a new gun in here, it's completely disassembled, cleaned, and lubed before being shelved or shot. Considering how easy this fix is, I would recommend taking it to a smith, would probably cost you less to fix it than the postage to ship it back to Mossberg. We carry S&J Hardware 20ga followers, haven't tried on in a Mossberg, but their followers work a lot more smoothly than any of the metal followers I've tried.

greystork; I had a similiar problem with my new Maverick 88, 20 ga. I could load shells in the magazine however, it took several try's to get the shell to insert and seat, I thought the problem would correct itself after a couple boxes of shells but it didn't at which time I contacted Maverick and they sent me an email with a "free" shipping label to return the gun to their repair service after a couple of weeks it returned and I have cycled several shells through the magazine and it seems to work better than before, although some shell don't insert into the magazine without several attempts. They never returned a synopsis of the work completed so I have no idea what they did to correct the problem. I haven't had it to the range yet but I will soon and I will let you know if the problem still exist.

You may wan't to contact Maverick service I believe they will help.
