Just got my Maverick 88 20 gauge from Dick's Sporting Goods. Took it to the range and could not get any shells in the magazine, so I put through some shells as a single shot, which worked fine. I did take the bird-shooting dowel out so that's not the problem.
Came home and tried to load the magazine with some dummy shells, still no luck. With my thumb I can only depress the magazine follower about half an inch, then it won't budge. Obviously it's still under warranty so sending it back is no problem. But I read online that someone had the same problem after having the gun for a few years. My question is whether to take the free repair and have Mossberg probably replace the plastic magazine follower, or bite the bullet and have a gunsmith put in a metal replacement and hope this problem is fixed once and for all. The Maverick 88/Mossberg magazine tubes are notoriously hard to take off, so I don't have the confidence to do this myself. But if anybody has a fix for this that doesn't have me putting the gun in some kind of vise and torquing the magazine off, I'm all ears.
