New to shotguns all together. Looking for HD gun that I can shoot clay with. Planning to get 590A1 (20 inch 9 rounds) with the collapsible stock (so we both me and my better part can shoot it). Started looking for a long barrel ... no info so far. Please let me know if there is a barrel (30 - 34) that will work with this model.

Item #51670 590A1 9-Shot with Adjustable Stock
12 Gauge, 9-Shot, 20" Barrel, 6-Position Aluminum Stock, Ghost Ring Sights

Not a clay gun by any stretch of the imagination! If a long barrel is available for it, it's going to come from Mossberg. Did you check with them?

I did. No barrel is available for the 9 shoot but for the 6 shot 590A1 they do have a 28 inch barrel.

Why would it not be a clay gun and HD gun with different barrels?

IMO, Ghost ring sights (or sights of any other flavor for that matter) would preclude it from being a clays gun.......I suppose you could shoot anything you wish with one, but as has been said it would not really be a clays gun by any stretch.........Art

Thank you for the clarification! :D Then it is better to opt out for the 3 point sight mounted on the short barrel (there is a config like that) and use standard setup for the long barrel. Great.

But I'm yet to hear any word on the long barrel for the 9 shot 590. Can't seem to find if ANY manufacturer makes one. :(

Check with a gunsmith, I would imagine a good one could move the lug so it could fit the long magazine model. There is no market for hunting barrels for the zombie guns, so no one is going to mass produce them.

Buy a field/HD combo 500. Or buy two separate guns. The the 590A1 is called a special purpose gun even by Mossberg. That should tell you something.

Would you drive a nail using a table saw?

One thing though: 500 SPECIAL PURPOSE (directly from http://www.mossberg.com/products/shotgu ... al-purpose ) So "Special Purpose" is not some thing specific ... But a good sound "Special" name :)

Thank you for great advise! I'll start looking. It is probably the best way to go for me.

One question - mechanically the "Zombie Gun" is identical to a "Hunting Gun" on the side of the receiver, correct? I just want to understand if there is a difference or it's all just the external look.

Thank you in advance!

Don't know what you mean by "on the side of the receiver", you will have to strip 2 guns side by side and see what parts are different. You might be able to switch the magazine tube and action bars and then use those parts and the barrel from a regular model.

The 500 special purpose isn't special. But, the 590A1 is.
You need to do more research.
For starters the 590A1 has a heavy walled bbl., and more metal parts than the 500.
The 590A1 is for one purpose. Period.

Shoot clays with what you want, but if I were in your shoes I'd get the 500 combo.

I like my gun to be all metal ... what can I say ... I'm weird like that ... and as for the Heavy Walled "bbl" - that is the reason I'm going with 590A1! I'll probably go with the 18.5 inch one and will add a flash hider for now and use 935 "bbls" for clay. It'll look nice (IMHO) and I'll be able to shoot it at the range. And most importantly I'll have one gun doing 2 jobs at the same time!
