I would like to replace the plastic safety button on my mossberg 500 with metal. Where can I get a metal button and what is the procedure to replace it. Any special tools needed, can I do it myself at home.Thanks in advance

YouTube is your tool here. Safety buttons are readily available. Amazon. And yes, you can do it!
If you can tie your shoe laces you can replace the safety on the Mossberg. Very simple. Go to YouTube as Neanderttha. suggested. Very simple.
I replaced the plastic safeties on my 500 and 590 with metal ones from NDZ Performance.
They were about $15 each on E bay.
There are two styles, the "higher" ones that look like a Vang Comp safety, and "wider" ones.
I chose the wide Cobra style, full thumb contact and while it is wide, it doesn't stick up near as high as the Vang Comp style.

I replaced one on a friends very old 500. It belonged to his father and had a lot of sentimental value so it was old and beat up, but I wanted to take care of it.
Replacing it was no problem, getting it apart was. The piece on the inside had come apart and acted as a perfect wedge for the action and it was locked up tight. I spent quite a few hours trying to get that thing apart. I finally did and everything‘s OK but it was a real booger.
On a sidenote that Action was just dry as a bone. When I give it back to my buddy, I told him that there is this new thing out there. It really helps mechanical things of any type function. I had him really going he asked “what is it?” I told him “It’s called oil” we both had a good laugh.

I replaced the safety switch on my Mossberg 500 with one I bought from havlinsales. It's the exact same configuration as the factory plastic one but made of metal. I replaced the factory screw with a allen head cap screw I got at Ace hardware. The new screw provided a nice bump(the screw head) that gives good purchase on the new switch.
