Price and fit not withstanding which of the 2 shotguns listed would be the "better" choice? It is for my wife so either would be 20ga. with 26" barrels. It would be used for occasional trap, skeet, and upland bird hunting. Not really looking for answers with regard to fit but more for which one is better quality?

Have you done an Internet search using one of the major search engines for "problems with CZ Redhead or problems with Mossberg Silver Reserve II"? Or have you searched this sight for issues with either of these guns? You should find a couple years worth of reading. I ain't got no use for either one, but some think they are about worth what they cost. Personally I can buy far far better used guns for the same money these dogs cost.

In my opinion the question you are asking has no good answer. Kind of like asking which is better a Kia that won't run or a Hundya that's wrecked, or if rancid pork is better than beef and maggots?

The CZ Redhead Deluxe far and away. Pay no attention to OF, he hates anything that he does not own. :D :D The CZ will last you a lifetime. The only SRII I know about is the one evbutler owns, it has quite a few rounds through it, but I have no personal experience with them.

Why in the world would someone think I hate things I don't own? There are a lot of good and great guns that I don't own. There are simply better guns than those mentioned that cost the same. Heck there are even less expensive guns that are better. Furthermore there are less expensive guns made in Turkey that are better. People who don't want to believe me are free to ignore me, they should feel no obligation to spend THEIR money the way I think they should. But if they ask, I'm still going to try and explain to them that there are better guns to be had for their money. At some point though, you just kind of root under your breath for some of them to get screwed on their purchase.

Would you care to give the OP and the rest of us examples?

I don't own either of the guns in question here. The original Silver Reserve was problematic, the latest revision has had mixed reviews. I own a different model CZ, and it has been flawless so far (7 months, about 2k rounds).

I'd go with the CZ...

I was in the same boat you were in. I have a Mossberg 500 and it served me well. I was looking at the Silver reserve II. I just couldn't find much aw far as good reviews, i do have a friend that has one and he loves it. Ended up ordering a CZ Redhead Deluxe from Buds. I'm waiting on it now. You'll get those you will say both are a POS because they aren't Baretta, Browning, etc. I have spoken with people who have the CZ and they love them. Lets face it, not everyone has 2+k to spend on an over/under

It seems the CZ Redhead and the Mossberg SR II are selling for around $800, for that money if you shop carefully you will be able to find used O/Us made by or for; AYA, Beretta, Bernardelli, Browning, Charles Daly, Franchi, Miroku, SKB, Sears, Weatherby, Winchester and Antonio Zoli. Now certainly many of these typically go for more, but not all of them. A local shop had a Beretta Silver Snipe for $650 not long ago as an example. It was a vent rib model, 28" F/M with good wood a great blue. It locked up tight as a drum but needed a good cleaning. Also a Sears 28" F/M made by Zoli sold locally not long ago for about $500. It had great wood!

Of course Mossberg 500's and Remington 870's cost a lot less than $800, as do both the current Weatherby pump or semi auto shotguns, and they are even reliable Turkish made guns.

I chose the CZ Canvasback last year because I saw all the great reviews and also saw that cdb shot a crazy amount of rounds through his trouble free...I've had many of their bolt action .22's and really enjoyed the quality...Thus, when I needed another o/u for my family to use I picked up a Canvasback Gold without hesitation!! Highly recommend the CZ Canvasback or Redhead...

I own the mossberg, and like it, the twenty is a little heavy but it shoots good. I have 2 cz's both sxs so I cant say much about the o/u. I do know both mossberg and CZ have really good warr. I havent had any problems with either of the guns, but I heard that mossberg had soft firing pins after I bought mine, a call to mossberg to ask them about it, and they just sent a new set of pins free along with good instructions on how to change them.

The pins in my guns still work so I havent changed them.

To me your choice is up to whatever you like best.

At the time I bought the mossberg 20g, I also bought the mossberg 28g for my wife. I have a spare set of firing pins for both guns.
Good luck
Mike

Here in-lies the problem for many of us. Before I bought my CZ I had searched for something that may be better, new or used. In the local shops, I found only 2 used O/U's, one a Browning, the other a Beretta. These guns were only $150 ~ $200 less than a new gun of the same model. For that difference in price, I'll buy new thank you. Looking online, yes, there were several used guns in my price range. The problem here, none were at shops close enough to actually check then out personally. Sure, if you buy used online you can send it back if it isn't what you expected. Do this 3 or 4 times, your 1k budget has now dropped to $600 ~ $700 due to shipping charges.
I do recommend looking at all your local shops for good deals, however, unless you are ready to pay repeated shipping charges, buy new...
In this case, I'd go for the CZ...

TODAY i HAD A $499 CZ USA Canvasback Gold special edition that Jon's Sporting in Osh. Wi bought on closeout from CZ. has 20 for $499 and 12's for $599.

These special editions were made for European market with silver receivers and gold birds. Go to Gun Broker.com for details.

Bass Pro says they have a hold on a Mossberg SR II for after Christmas. Only benefit is the Mossberg used Beretta Mobilechokes. But $660 that's 1/3 more than CZ 2015 Canvasback Gold.

One last point, Cabela will not sell a CZ USA TEAL, now $849,99. Order two on Black Friday at $549.99. Ordered paid for 11/22, shipped 11/24 came to store 11/30 got email in call "pick up"; they agreed to hold for 21 days; called not in "pick up", the Sxx's said they returned it. BX, they sold it for $849.99 and would not man up on doing this before Christmas.

Jon came thru and he personally pick out one with good wood. Watch Cabela's they owe Capital One $4 Billion or so on Bass Pro deal.

The search for something for nothing continues. 3 to 4 years later a gun that is expensive to make still can't be made both well and cheap.
