Hello all,

I recently got a motorcycle and would like to figure out the best way to transport my shotgun to the range.

I'm in SF and the Pacific Rod and Gun club isn't to far away.

My O/U I can just break down and put in a case, in a back pack, but for the mossberg, any ideas? building a frame mount or carry cases, that aren't straight up an down...

Any decent "break-down" case will work for you if you remove the barrel and transport the gun in 2 pieces.

You don't say if you have a "sissy bar" for the rear seat, or a rack over the rear fender - that gives you more options.....

Give it some thought, and look at motorcycle accessories, as well.

It ain't rocket science!

Just take the barrel off the Mossberg for transit and use a soft breakdown case on your backpack

It's really very simple and you wouldn't even have to take the gun apart. Nor will you have to buy something that you don't probably already have. Tie a C-clamp to the springs on the back of your seat. Tighten the C-clamp on the muzzle, duct-tape a neighbor kid's roller-skate to the stock and you're good to go.

This right here is why I joined. Quality advice that's just good enough.

Rollin, now you're showing your age. Harleys haven't had exposed springs on their Buddy Seats since about the 1960's. :D :D

leather scabbard on handlebars
That is something I am looking into. I love this idea, I need to change my handle bars to make it fit properly.

Thank you!!

I wondered if roller-skates were still made when I wrote that. Maybe a rollerblade would work. It would protect the stock better with the high boot..

Sorry, but I'd rather just paint a big sign on my back that says "somebody please hassle me" than to obviously carry a firearm on a motorcycle anyplace in the country, especially San Fransisco, California. I have no idea what laws they have in California about carrying around firearms, but imagine they are bad. It's bad enough to be riding on a motorcycle in heavy traffic without telling every idiot on the interstate you are carrying a valuable firearm and also letting every cop know you are going somewhere with a gun.

Think about it.

Legally conceal the firearm, if that's possible in California.

I make a very good living from people testing out how far they can go to assert their rights. Be a coward on the highway, and never purposely draw any attention to yourself there, and you'll likely live longer and happier, is my advice.

I'm faced with possibly transporting two shotguns from GA to CO on a motorcycle. I'll also have my Lab with me, but that is already worked out and tested.

I plan to take down the guns and roll them up with my tent/sleeping bag. I don't particularly want anyone to see me tooling down the highway with guns strapped on, not because there's anything wrong with that but the parking and leaving the bike would be a major problem.

In 2008 while enroute to Alaska on my bike, our small group was passed by three guys on Harleys with gear piled up on the back. Each one had a soft gun case with some sort of long gun inside. The gun cases were perched right on the top of the other gear in plain view. These guys all looked like Vietnam Vets and were dressed with the traditional Harley garb, do rags, vests, tats, long beards, etc. Nothing wrong with any of that, but you get the picture - they looked pretty rough. We ran into them at a gas stop and asked where they were headed. Alaska they said. We politely reminded them about Canadian laws regarding firearms and asked if they had a permit for their guns. Nope they said, they'd deal with it at customs.

We never saw them again, and Alaska, despite being a big place, has relatively few roads.

I think they got sent home

My advice is to figure out how to hide any gun when riding a bike. As SuperX said, the less attention you draw to yourself, the better off you'll be, IMHO.

I really appreciate the sound advice! Thank you!
