My Verona story

We didn't hunt when I was a kid, mainly because my dad wasn't a hunter. He took us fishing all the time, but we never hunted. I didn't start until I was nearly 40 years old and went on a corporate dove hunt. That one weekend got me hooked and I've been a casual hunter and general gun enthusiast for the last 24 years. Anyway, from that day in the fall of 2000 onward, I've looked for good buys on firearms.

In 2004, Galyan's sporting goods had been acquired by Dick's (a real shame) and I went to the store in Arlington, TX because they had serious markdowns on all guns. They had one O/U left and it was a Verona 20 gauge. I can't remember the exact model number (it's in the back of my safe) but I think it was a 503. I got the shotgun for under $500 after sales tax and it's been a steady field gun ever since. Both my sons have hunted with it numerous times and my youngest son got his first limit on dove with it when he was about 13. I've used it to hunt quail many times and it's now a reminder of great memories in the field with my sons. No doubt my grandsons will use it as well. It's one of the best investment in lasting value that I ever made. Below is a pic of me hunting quail with it when my GSP, Daisy, was first learning to be steady to shoot.

I’m not positive but I think those were made by one of the Rizzini companies. If so, you got a steal at that price. Thanks for sharing!

The 5XX was made by F.A.I.R. and imported by B.C. Outdoors till they went out of business. There was LX 500,501,502,503,504 each # was a different chain. 501 was available an indipendent dealers, 502 was sold at dicks. I dont remember who had what but Gander Mtn, Gaylans, and cabelas one of those numbers. Slight difference in them. My 502's have silver receiver and gloss stock. My friends Gander Mtn model had silver receiver and oil finished stock. One or both of the others had case colored receivers.
Savage picked up the LX5XX model and sold it under the Milano name. That only lasted a year or two. They didnt push them and jacked the price up. Another company used the Verona name but I cant remember the name. the same group that sold Kalispel gun cases.
The original run of Verona was probably the best deal on an O/U. The same gun with the F.A.I.R. name on it would have been $1500 at that time. I would drool over a 16ga F.A.I.R. at that time at that price.

FYI the Franchi Instinct SL 16ga is a F.A.I.R.

Those old Veronas are incredible value guns. Exceptionally well made, and the early imports were at a great price-point. I have a LX 503 from the same time period that has somewhere between 12,000 and 15,000 rounds through it, and it still locks up tight and shoots great. I did strip and refinish the stock to make it look a little better and repel water better in the field, but other than that it shoots and loos as it did the day I brought it home. As they say: if you've got a good horse, ride it! Thanks for sharing.
