Hey all,
I'm looking to purchase a new semi auto shotgun. I'm left handed and left eye dominant. I am looking for a gun 1000 or less that is either left handed or left hand friendly. I own 3 pump shotguns now and want a decent and reliable semi automatic. I plan to use it to hunt everything, but especially turkey and waterfowl. So far I have been debating the beretta a300 and the franchi affinity 3 left hand. I've seen the tristar but am not sure how reliable that gun would be. I dont mind right handed guns as long as they are left hand friendly. I figured I would get a 12 gauge as its the most versatile for me. I've also seen the stoeger m3000 but not sure if that's left hand friendly. It's important to me the gun cycles light target loads and 3 inch magnums equally well. Sorry for such a long winded post, great site you have here.!
Thanks, Matt

Benelli, Franchi and Fabarm make left-hand semi shotguns. Many lefties shoot right handed guns and do not mind. With shims you can change to cast of most guns. If you plan on shooting clays at night under the lights, the flash from the breech will probably bother you.

Personally, I would buy only a left-hand shotgun. I just feel better shooting a gun made for a lefty. but that is very subjective.

I have had zero issues with my RH A400s; the shims make them cast on for a LH shooter. I find it easier to load by holding the gun at the wrist and using my offhand to load the chamber and magazine.

What is your opinion s on the left hand benelli m2. I dont have the opportunity to shoulder one, but they look good on paper. It looks as though the bolt release is still.on the right side of the gun which kinda bothers me. Also I notice the Remington versamax comes in left hand too. Any thought on that one? I can up the price to around 1400 if needed. Thanks Matt.

Hi,

An other gun to look at is Winchester SX4. A very simple reversible safety which needs no extra or new parts and can be done at home. Other than a total lack of shims for it, it's an decent gun, (boo Winchester). I look for guns that have a shim set for the stock and have a easily reversible safety. I don't care what side the hulls come out.

While I'm not a big fan of S/A guns period, when I do buy one, I refuse to buy left-handed guns. Buy a lefty if you like, but understand that you will pay too much to get it and resale, if you can find a buyer, will not match a "standard" right hand gun - no matter the name on it.

I am going with the synthetic versmax. I cant wait to get it. Hopefully the issues they had when introduced are all ironed out. I most likely wont ever shoot a 3.5 inch shell, but it's nice to be able to if I want or need too. I was really considering an M2 but I have read so many issues about them patterning high, and I would really enjoy the soft shooting of the versmax. I might just turkey hunt with 3.5 s if it's as soft shooting as everyone says.
Thanks Matt.

I got the LH versamax 3 repairs and a year later Remington finally traded me for a v3...v3 is a better feeling gun ..recoil difference is negligible..when shooting the versamax a left hand gun is hard to get used to but you don't get powder in the eyes...inertia guns like the a5 browning don't blow gas and are a good LHOption...also if your going to hunt deer with buckshot stay away from overbore barrels they don't throw good patterns

Yes, some of the Benelli semi-autos shoot high, about 80/20 or so, but you can change shims and buy a bigger front bead from Benelli and bring the POI down to 60/40.

If you buy a Benelli I recommend the Comfortech - I think that what it's called - recoil pad. It really works.

Lol post like these make me indecisive. Maybe I should just stick with the Franchi Affinity. I feel like its ridiculous to have to make any adjustments or modifications to a 1200 plus dollar shotgun. I cant find a bad review on the affinity. Not sure if it's worth shelling out over a 1000 dollars on any of these. I really thought the versamax would work out. The fact the benelli is known for shooting way high, and the versmax seems to constantly need repairs drives me nuts. How's that v3 for a lefty beaver? I read about has gas blowback with those too. Had me worried. I just want a shptguns thats reliable, left hand preferably and hits were I'm aiming. It seems like its difficult to get all 3.

Love the v3..it does put out gas and powder residue that gets in my eyes same as my daughters 1187 or a 1022 ruger for that .matter it's the draw back to a lefty shooting g a right hand gas semiauto but after the year I had the versamax I put about 200 rounds through it and just seemed wrong being a left hand gun ...I've always shot an 870 and the v3 just points natural to me..
The front sight does sit high on the front rib so if you aim with the vent rib it's on target ..but if you bring the bead down to where it looks as if it is ready to disappear from the back of the rib, like aiming an 870, it will shoot about a foot low at 60 yards..I've ordered a truglo turkey sight to put on mine..the older I get the harder it's getting to keep the barrel bead and a running deer all in focus at the same time

I dont know about all the Tristars, but I bought my kids each a youth Raptor and they have been very reliable. I think each of them had a couple jams on the first box of shells, but they've each a load of shells through them since without issue. I wouldn't be scared to have another Tristar.

It's a bit more money, but the A400 Beretta is available in a lefty. Or the right handed models have reversible safetys and shims for a lefty. Also, both of ours shoot flat.. close to 50/50.

To heck with it. I'm going with the versamax. I finally finally got.to shoulder one today and it really seemed to fit. I've been doing a ton of research and every shotgun manufacturer has issues at times. Most versamax reviews are favorable. I've also read that remingtons customer service is good. They are made 45 minutes from where I live. I am going with the synthetic left hand versamax as im not a big fan of the max five. These guns are the same except for camo pattern correct?

Thanks, Matt.

I have several of the shotguns mentioned. The Left-handed Affinity and it comes with several shims but for me with 55 shim it shoots a 50/50 pattern. Very impressive shotgun. The tristar Viper G2 is reliable, a little heavier than Franchi, but will need cleaning more often. Mossberg 930 is very reliable for about 300 rounds, then will need good cleaning of gas system and rings. Mossberg is a heavy gun.
