I was recently gifted my grandfather's 1942 Winchester Model 12 in 16 gauge, labeled 2 3/4", full choke. The receiver has holes for an aftermarket sight. I'm 50 and have used plenty of shotguns over the years belonging to relatives but this is the first that is mine. Because this is the only gun I actually own I am on a mission to learn to use this as my only gun if possible. I occasionally participate in sporting clays tournaments. In addition, my parents own about 220 acres west of San Antonio that borders a 3,500 acre ranch owned by family friends. I have open access to all of it each hunting season. I have personally shot dove out there and have seen deer, turkey and quail taken as well. Deer run on the small side; the usual gun is a Henry .357 magnum rifle and 75 yards would be a long distance. The ranch is not hunted much and game is plentiful.
I am financially well off enough that I could afford a whole collection. It just hasn't been necessary. This is exciting to me, owning this family heirloom so I hope to use it as much as I can. I look forward to lurking here and reading about shotgun ownership. Any advise is appreciated.
