Gentlemen,
My buddy Galen from up in NY was here for the past 3 days, he had his new to him G&H 12 bore with him and unfortunately we only had one shot at a Grouse in about 6 hrs of hunting and I missed the shot with my 28 gauge Huglu 200A. Was wishing for my L.C. Smith 16 gauge to make that hard shot thru the trees.
Galens 12 gauge G&H 2" Chambered gun only weighs 5.9lbs and is a real beauty, with 25" barrels. I wanted him to be able to down a Grouse with that nice 2" Brit made double gun, unfortunately it was way to warm and the Grouse just would not sit at all, spooky birds beyond belief, only got with in 50 yards of one Grouse in 3 days. In fact we only saw 3 Grouse the entire time Galen was here, no Woodcock what so ever. Until we get some colder rainy weather, its going to be real tough bird hunting, to dry and noisy. Maybe after Thanksgiving, the weather will cooperate. This next week is still suppose to be in the 60's and mostly sunny. Not good Grouse hunting weather, thank the Lord the 1st 2 weeks were cool and rainy.

John Henry,
Our log cabin is just off Rt 6 across Pine Creek from the Log Cabin Restaurant, just off of Lick Run Rd. Powder Horn Ln is the 1st private Rd off of Lick Run to the left. We hunt all over Potter, Tioga and Warren counties in our mountain. Below Cheery Springs where your camp was, has very few Grouse left, some Deer, you have to get up on top of the Cherry Springs mountain, if you want to hunt Grouse, in that area.
The 2nd Grouse I killed was up on Cheery Springs this season. We moved a good number of Grouse before we even got a chance to shoot, the Grouse are super Spooky this season, the mountain is dry, have not even seen any homie type Woodcock at all. Still lots of Deer being killed on Rt 6 between Galeton and Mansfield. We had 6 Grouse sitting on West Branch Road, as we came back to the Log Cabin last night, just before dusk. Unfortunately we can no longer hunt on that private land, due to the permanent home less than 40 yards away.

all the best,

DoublesForever,
You are absolutely correct, still is great to be out in the Grouse woods with good company, which my friend Galen happens to be. Great sportsman who I never doubt, I just gave him a key to our Log Cabin, this is never taken lightly, only the main members of our Grouse Camp ever receive them, very few members left alive. Sense Gunny Bowman passed away this year, Galen now has his key, I have one left that belonged to Tom Batz. It probably will never be passed on to another sportsman.

WTJones,
Where are you located that your season is just opening in mid November? Welcome to the hunting season, here in Pa its been to warm to hunt Grouse decently. Looking forward to hunting after Thanksgiving this season when the weather turns cold every day.

all the best,

Pine Creek Dave,
I live in eastern kansas. Our quail season opened this weekend. I have hunted both days until it got too warm for the dog. Haven't seen a quail yet but I'm not home doing chores! Birds around here are few and far between. I guess that's why I enjoy all the pics and stories of everyone else. I think I shot 11 birds total last year. Its all about the dog for me anyway so I guess we got 11 solid points! Best of luck and stay well.
