Will it fit two 32" O/U's?

I would have to say no. I bought a Pelican 1750 with the intention of putting 2 32 in. O/U's in it. They fit but were nearly on top of each other. So I cut the foam for one and only use it for one. And for one gun I would prefer the 1700 anyways, since it is smaller and lighter. It makes it easier to travel with, not to mention cheaper than some other options.

take the foam out of the pelican. use a nice break down case. fits two guns. and glasses, vest, etc. at least my 1720 does.

Demi's option is a good one. its always beneficial to have a smaller case in and out of the hotel and being able to pack more with the guns to drop the weight in other bag.

Steve,

I have the 1700 and I don't think you will get it to fit two o/u's. I bought mine from Quality Cases and Containers in Richardson. They laser scanned my Blaser high rib o/u and used a water jet to custom cut the foam to fit the gun(when broken down). Even if you could get two guns to fit, I don't think you would have enough foam around the edges to properly protect the guns if the case is mishandled.

I cut a set of foams for two 32" and it fit, but tight, BUT the weight was over the limit for the airlines and the added cost put that experiment to rest. It's cheaper to just take two 1700's as I get to check two bags for each ticket free so with the wife we check 4 pieces for free. Just have to keep her to one checked bag.

Thanks guys. I think I've scrapped the idea of toting two guns in one box. It would be for me and the boy......but the boy is 15 and in a few years will likely not always be with me. So, it's probably better that I get separate cases.

I sent our guns out of state with my folks to their place in Colorado a couple of weeks ago. We flew up and stayed with them and shot last week. I though they were coming back when we did, but they are staying a little longer. So I considered flying back with our guns (both Zoli's in Negrini cases) but I chickened out at the last minute. My Zoli case is a pretty nice Negrini, but his is an entry level case that is pretty flimsy.

Anyway, it got me to thinking.

I appreciate the input.

I've flown literally all over the World with two O/U in a Pelican 1700. No foam.

I've recently upgraded to the 1720 to carry one gun. Tube set, vest, gun sleeve, backpack, cleaning stuff, glasses, Sitka rain gear, and Le Chameau rain boots. All under 50 lbs.

Not a huge fan of the tuffpack only because of its size and loading into rental cars. If space is not an issue the tuffpack is an equally good airline case.

Zack,

How are you protecting the guns? wrapping them in other clothes, or in a padded sleeve? You've got me thinking now, but not quite sure how to protect the gun. One problem I've had is with the vibration on the plane, it loosened up screws on the bump buster where I had issues when I got to the shoot. The foam should isolate the gun from the vibration.

I have a few different break down soft cases we use. Boyt, Red Oxx, and Briley depending what type of shoot it is. All three fit and you pack the other items around them. Nothing moves around and is very safe and protective. A few years ago I picked up the Pelican from the airline and the entire corner of the Pelican was smashed. Had to have been caught up and pinched in something hydraulic on the plane. Who knows how much force it took to do that. But my K80 4 barrel set at the time didn't have any damage at all and Pelican replaced the case, no questions asked.

The 1700 is pretty tight for most repeating shotguns, so this is directed at the 1720 owners:

Most airlines allow 62" for checked baggage, before the oversize/overweight charges kick in. The 62" is calculated by outside Length + Width + Height.

The 1720, from the Pelican site, is 44.37" + 16.00" + 6.12" which totals 66.50".

Are people getting nicked for the oversize fee at airline check-in time with the 1720? The fee is $75 each way for most airlines as I remember.

Any problems fitting a 1720 into most rental cars? How about 2 of them?

Is there any issue at places like Nationals that have armories where you leave your guns, do you hand it over in the pelican case? Probably have to tip the guy behind the counter after days of lifting it in and out, just wonder if they even allow it?

Thanks in advance!

No. After six years and many thousands of miles, never an issue. Baggage handlers never even blinked. It MAY have something to do with my elite frequent flyer status, but I don't think so.

A little tight in a compact/economy car, no issues with a decent sized car and certainly none with an SUV.
