Recoil Pad Restoration or Replacement

I have an older 2p gauge mossberg 500 with the wood stock and the recoil pad has hardened with its age. Is there a product I can soak the recoil pad in to soften it back to original or is it better to replace with a grind to fit pad? I can't seem to find a direct fit replacement for the wood stock 20 gauge so that's why I'm looking at the other 2 options. Thanks!

I recommend replacement with a Pachmayer Declarator pad by a professional gunsmith. The Decel pad on my 35 year old 280 Ackley is still working and looking good. I put a little WD-40 on a paper towel occasionally and wipe it down to keep it looking new. There are softer pads out there, but nothing lasts like the Decelerator.

If you have a belt sander, you can fit your own pad.
The Miles Gilbert Recoil Pad Fitting Jig is worth every penny. High, high, recommendation.

If you don't have a belt sander... the cost of a cheap belt sander and the recoil pad fitting jig is about the cost of the gunsmithing for one pad.

Gunsmiths are worth the money but this is one of the least technical things a gunsmith can do.

Watch the many videos of how you do it, take your time and work slow. You can have a very professional looking job in about an hour. I like the Pachmayer pads. They work almost as well as something like a KickEeze, but they last longer and are easier to sand. Much less "gummy" than some others.

Keep posting with questions and progress and soon you'll have 20 good posts. Then you could sell your slightly used jig here on the equipment board and avoid the EBay fees. But mine has 4 installs on it and I know there will be a 5th.

Once you feel the difference a good pad makes, you won't want to go back.

Have you tried calling Mossberg?

While this part is out of stock here it seems to indicate the 12 and 20 gauge use the same pad.
Which means there are probably several pre-fit pads that will work.

If you go to the limb saver website they have various templates of the pre-fit pads you can print on your home printer and compare the template to your original butt pad... Very easy to see if the 12 gauge pad will work.
