Just wondering who still shoots an 870 as their main trap gun.

I'm a 65 yr old and I do not shoot competition, however I do make it to the range and shoot about 100/150 rounds once a week sometime twice. I still use my Rem 870 12ga quite a bit on and off the range. On the range I average 75-80/100. I am however very partial to my new 20ga Win SX4. I also am just as proficient with my Sears and Roebuck model 200 Ted Williams 20ga made by Winchester vintage approximately last production series late '70's., It is a pump. I have several nephews that occasionally shoot with me and also prefer the 870 and (are just as accurate with it) than my SX4, Stoeger Comp, A400,
Last weekend I exposed three of them to upland hunting (preserve) and two of them chose the 870 and S/R TW

All my guns are 28" barrels with mod chokes. The 870 is a proven skeet, trap, wobble, and (exhibitionist) choice shotgun. I have seen some shooter cycle three rounds as fast and accurate as someone with a semi-auto.

Last words - I think it is a great choice for range shooting. Competition or pleasure. What ever your choice keep getting out and enjoy the shoot.

I am a retired Police Officer. I was one of three range officers for the Dept. and also the armorer for our S&W handguns and our 870's. One time, we had a training shoot where we threw clay pigeons for the guys to shoot using the 870 with slug barrel. Each officer was issued his own 870. At the time we had approx. a 70 man Dept.
One of the other range officers said he would throw 4 clay pigeons if I was up to trying to shoot them. I got on the line and told him to throw the birds, and I shot down all four of them with my 870. I was impressed as were a lot of the other officers. I don't think I could do that again, but it sure felt good getting all four that time.

I would never consider myself a trap shooter, but I have one trap gun.
The 870 Competition. Rare but excellent gun.

I was at a sporting shoot a few years ago , one squirrel target machine was set 20 ft from the stand !
I watched a shooter try to shoot the target , just as it fell off the arm and even though he missed , he
center punched a unopened case of targets , broke all 135 with one shot . We ALL clapped at his
expertise too !

I have a lot of love for the 870. My first REAL trap gun was an 870TC. I still have several 870TB's as well as a TC and an All American.
The last time I saw Rudy Etchen at the Grand (around 1999 or so) he was still shooting his 870. I'd bet he would get a laugh out of "pump gun only" events.
The point is 870's are outstanding guns regardless of the era.
