Someone could have fitted a set of 20-gauge barrels to a receiver that was originally built as a 16-gauge gun. We need to see a lot of good pictures.

 

OK, I will go to the gun shop on Friday and look it over again.
I do remember that two serial numbers matched. One was the forend and I cant remember if the other was on the barrels or the trigger guard... getting old sucks.
Basically I saw 20ga "Sterlingworth" for $395 and I jumped at it just in case.
Someone put it on consignment. I asked if something was wrong with it and they told me that $395 was all the seller wanted?

OK, I finally got back to the gun store.
ALL the serial numbers match. barrel, receiver, tang, forend all say #367810
It is a 20 ga and it is in excellent condition. Barrells look like new.
The receiver is blued and says Fox Sterlingworth.
The barrels say "Made by Savage Arms Corp. Utica.N.Y.U.S.A. and Sterlingworth Fluid compressed steel.
I took pictures but I am electronically handicapped. Tried cutting and pasting pics but could not?
Still confused.... price is $395, when something looks to good to be true it usually is.
Help !

 

Buy it! It's a nice "true" Sterlingworth built (or maybe just assembled) by Savage after they bought out Fox at around that timeframe. Savage MAY have applied the serial numbers when they fitted the components .....

 

367810 is a 16-gauge serial number. I'd be very worried that someone stupid enough to blue the receiver might well have also hot blued the barrels!!

 

I apologize for my ignorance, but what does hot blueing do that should have me very worried?

 

The bluing salts attack the soft solder that holds the barrels and ribs together, and over time they will likely come loose

 

is there any way for me to tell if they have been HOT blued ?
I keep going back to the $395 price tag.... If it looks too good to be true, it usually is !

As long as its not a model b and is a true sterlingworth it probably worth it. Dose it say sterlingworth compressed steel on Barrels? if the barrels are 28 or 30 inches buy it. if it has 32 inch barrels give me the address. only kidding if it has 32s make sure you buy it.

 

BUY the gun! Even if it has 26" barrels. It will make you VERY happy! If I was there, I'd own the gun by now. Buy it before someone else sees it.

My AH Fox 12ga ser # is 47000 there are letters missing in Sterlingworth there are small arrows pointing to some crude engraving on the back of the barrel and on the receiver need help to date this shotgun and its history

 

That is not a Fox serial number.

 

There is definitely something funny about that gun. A 20 gauge with 16 gauge serial number? Plus it is in great condition for such a low price. At that price I am surprised the shop didn’t buy it and flip it for a nice profit. For the shop not to do that it should tell you something. Does this shop have a good reputation. But for that price I guess it is worth taking a chance on it.
