I am looking for information regarding a double barrel shotgun with the name Saxton on both sides of the stock. The words "London Fine Twist" are engraved between the barrels.According to my family, the shotgun was brought by a family member who traveled here from Germany.

So, there were two firms using the Saxton name? I can't see a Belgium made gun having "London Twist" nor an English gun using Belgian Proofs.. the Mystery deepens.Unless of course the manufacturer moved from one country to the other for whatever reason..

I too have been looking for info on my saxton double barrel gun. Mine has saxton and England Fine Twist stamped on it. It has a brass cap in the stock for the caps and the tamping rod appears to be hickory. I also have the powder horn. My gun was brought to North Dakota from Pennsylvania by my grandfather in the late 1800's.

I also have what sounds like your gun. 30" double barrel"Saxton, England" engraved on both sides. Rib between barrels says "England and Fine Laminated Steel". My grandfather called the barrel "Piano Wire Barrel Finish". Under the handgrip (removable) there is the # 350965.Maybe this will help

Many inexpensive Belgian shotguns are marked "London Fine Twist". It describes the manufacturing process used to make the damascus barrels. If your shotgun was made in either England or Belgium, it will have proof marks. Remove the barrels and look on the bottom and also on the table.

I also have a Saxton 10 Gauge w// damascous twist. Looked hard and the most info I have seen yet is on this site. Still works. Well, at least my grandfather used to shoot it frequently untill both barrels shot simultaneously. Couldn't move his arm for a week... Any one else know any more history on these guns?

I ALSO OWN A SAXTON DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN. 12 gauge WITH 30" BARREL SAME DESCRIPTION AS OTHER POSTS. THE ONLY # ON BARRELS IS 13. THERE ARE 3 SETS OF BIRMINGHAM PROOF MARKS ON EACH BARREL. TOP MARK IS A CROWN ABOVE 2 CROSSED SPEARS WITH THE LETTERS B(>) C(^) P(<) INSIDE THE CROSSED PARTS OF THE SPEARS. (BIRM. PROOF POST 1813) MIDDLE PROOF IS A CROWN OVER THE LETTERS BP IN FANCY SCRIPT. (BIRM. PROOF PRE. 1925) LOWER PROOF IS A CROWN ABOVE 2 CROSSED SPEARS WITH THE LETTER V BELOW CROWN BETW. SPEARS. THIS MAY BE A DATE CODE BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND IT YET. HOPE THIS HELPS.

I also have a Saxton double Barrel, 30" , with the works "Laminated Stell" engraved on top between the barrels. It appears to be a 12 gauge. There is a proof mark on the bottom of both barrels but these old eyes can't read them. The mark is a bit taller than it is wide and is about 1/8" wide. There is not serial No that I have been able to locate.

My reference book says "Marking seen on double barrel hammer shotgun, maker unknown" But we can determine a bit more than that. Look at the bottom of the barrels under the forearm (you'll have to take the forearm off to do this) for proof marks, By doing this the country of origin can be determined, either Belgium or England. A Belgian made gun will have the letters "ELG" in an oval with possibly a crown over that. An English made gun will have crossed halberds (spear/battle axe)
with a crown over that and letters in the intersection. The letters will determine either the Birmingham or London proof house. In any case the gun was most likely made sometime between 1880 and 1914 when World War One, The Great War or The War to End All Wars (choose one) cut off exports of guns from Europe.

Hello all, My name is Mike, I own a Saxton side by side.
it is a 12 gauge,and 30 inch barrells.
Mine has laminated Barrells not Damascos and no serial
number also NOT blued.Mine is "browned". Mine is in
origional condition. And, it has not been fired in a very long
time.A guy I was just talking to, yesterday...said it is a collector
Maybe for Display only.
Carving on the stock was done by hand, the scrolling on the
metal is done by hand too. But, what is its value?
Could it have been made by Weatherly or Weatherby?

English Saxton shotguns have been described with a W. Bentley Pat. and Birmingham proofs.
Walter Bentley was in the trade at Price Street, Birmingham 1884/85.

Most however are Belgian by Ferdinand Drissen or Neumann Freres and the barrels are marked "London Fine Twist" or "Belgium Laminated Steel."
