Have a tac-star sidesaddle on my 870. Worked fine for a long time (5 yrs) however, lately the part by the second screw was getting looser and looser. Today during a shooting session, the saddle shot itself off that second screw, it spun around and hit me in the face. I pushed the saddle back into place, and pushed the screw back through its hole, which I believe to be a temp solution.

I believe it is likely it could shoot itself off again, so I am looking into a possible replacement. What other brands, etc of side saddles are out there that are maybe of better design than the tac star? I am not into the brands that stick on using adhesive, I am interested in basically the BEST and most durable side saddle for the money. Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Loc-tite would cure your problem. Blue loc-tite would be sufficient. I would put the loctite in the screw holes in the side-saddle instead of on the screws. Less chance of getting loc-tite in the trigger housing.

On an 11-87, it's possible to over tighten the screws to the point of causing malfunctions. I have had no problems with my 11-87 screws installed only snug using loc-tite.

What are the advantages/dissadvantages of that unit? Isn't it held in place the same way at the same point with the same scews? The extra weight must make it even easier for the unit to come loose. Also, I heard that the messa unit is a bit too tight, and it's hard to extract the shells from.

My other concern would be durability, if your out SHTF, and your gun smashes against a rock, and dents a loop in, you're in trouble. Where as plastic is more likely to absorb the impact, since it can't dent.

Trust me, I have a Mesa side saddle. It will not dent from a fall. You've got to hit it with a sledge hammer to really deform the metal. A fall onto the side saddle with just the weight of the gun, will not harm it.

Plastics conversely can harden in time and become brittle, they may lose grip on the shell. On the Mesa, if the grip goes, you just replace the rubber strip with a new one. The unit is serviceable. Plus holds 8 rounds if you choose that model.
