Slugs leading barrel

I just got an FN SLP barrel for my SX4 and couldn't wait to try some slugs in it. I had a bunch of Winchester slugs laying around so I ran a box through.

I was amazed at the amount of leading I got. Big chunks. I was also amazed at how hard it was to get out considering it's a chrome lined barrel. Is this common with rifled slugs? Any advice on easy lead removal? Can I polish the bore to make it better in the future?

I have used a regular old bronze bore brush wrapped in 0000 steel wool saturated in your favorite solvent. I remove the handle from my cleaning rod and chuck the rod up in my electric drill and go to town at low speed. Work it up and down the bore while spinning it at a moderate speed. Keep the brush and steel wool saturated with solvent. This method also works well for getting stubborn plastic wad fouling out of the forcing cone and bore.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I finally got about all of it out. At least enough I feel comfortable shooting the gun again.

Wow! It was an unbelievable amount of lead. I have some new bore brushes on the way.

I'm going to get it cleaned up really well and I may even hit it with some JB Bore Paste to slick it up a bit. I have never had this problem before. Maybe it's because it's new?

I will also try some new slugs to see if they do better.

I haven't shot a bunch of the Foster slugs so I was not aware of that.

I have a dedicated slug gun and I mold and load the Lyman 525 slugs for 12 gauge. I have the Lee slug mold too. I was reading that some folks have had decent results in smooth bores, but it does not seem common. I'm going to try those and see.

Yes, and they never wear out even when they look like a plumber cleaned out drain lines with them. I hit them with brake/carb cleaner when I am hosing out an action just so they don't look so bad.
I'm 68 and think that I've worn out three or four in my line so 12 should see you through three or four generations of shotgun shooters.

Here's a plug for the Hoppes tornado brush. Just a couple of passes and the barrel was squeaky clean. It was by far the easiest and most complete barrel cleaning ever. This thing is amazing.

I shot a bunch over the weekend and this gun is still 100% reliable and was awesome with buckshot.

I have a taller front sight ordered and hopefully it will get me zeroed with slugs.

The taller sight is nice. I need to shoot some more to make sure it's right. How do you guys sight for the rifled slugs? What distance?

Also, I am still amazed at the amount of leading I get. About 10 slugs and there are giant chunks of lead in the barrel. The tornado brush is amazing though. About 10 passes and it is spotless.

Skunk: Been down this road many times. The BPI/Claybuster Blue Slug wads are the way to go. Powder Coat the Lyman 525 Slugs and fill the Bases with Hot Glue. This prevents the Tail of the slug from being deformed going down the bore, which kills accuracy. The beauty of these wads is that the Slug never touches the bore. I also Load 1 oz. Lee Slugs with this same load you don't need to PC those as they don't even get close to the bore during firing. I have also found that if your gun has interchangeable chokes that a Rifled Choke Tube will greatly improve accuracy @1-2" at 50 yards

Next : and this is important,, there is no need to Hotrod these Slugs which are 1.2OZ. with a Big Flat nose on them, or 1 OZ for teh Lee Slugs. 1250-1300 Fps Max !!! I load mine using my Standard 12 Trap Load of 18-20 gr of Green Dot. Also "Fold Crimp" only. This insures that the hull opens evenly all the way around which enhances accuracy.

When you load these you've got to take into consideration what you are going to shoot with them?
If they are for Target Shooting or Plinking No Steel or Paper Target will ever know the difference. If you are going to shoot Polar Bears or Pick Up Trucks then go buy some Brenneke Factory Loaded slugs. they make ones up to 1 1/2 OZ at 1600+ fps that will take down anything on this planet. But really if it is HD Even a Lee Slug at 1200 Fps will stop the fight instantly. You just have to hit the target and that's where the practice with these rounds comes in. they don't kick very hard at all.

I could go on about this subject as I have been doing the Tactical Shotgun thing for about 15 years now, including numerous 3 gun shoots as well as 7 Tac Shotgun Classes at Front Sight.

In Closing got to www.vangcomp.com and have a look at teh Vang Comp Thunder Stick Summit which will take place 26,27,28 of September at the old Front Sight facility near Pahrump NV Now ran by Staccato.
Hope to see you there.
