Slugs out of a Coach Gun

I just picked up a used 12 gauge 20" Coach Gun. I took it to the range a couple of days ago and it works great. I plan on using this as a camp gun. It shoots bird shot and buckshot to point of aim.

I was wondering if it's ok to shoot slugs out of it?

I know that 00 Buck at close range would probably have a more profound effect. But, I'm still curious about if anyone has ever shot slugs out of theirs?

It's the fixed choke system, one barrel is IC and the other is Mod. I have some Remington Rifled Slugs lying around. I'm not familiar with the slugs you mentioned. I shortened the stock and put a limbsaver recoil pad on it. Sounds like I should be good to go and give some slugs a try.

Some years ago I had a Turkish coach gun with Greener crossbolt made by Uzumlu. It was not pretty but it was strong with cyl/cyl tubes. I shot probably 20 slugs out of it one afternoon just trying to see if I could reliably hit anything. I did pretty well after allowing for the crossover effect of the barrel convergence. By the end the recoil was beginning to be a bit tiresome, but for a few shots it wasn't too bad. After 20 shots or so, I felt wetness on the trigger-guard which had cut open my finger. That didn't happen on the first shots but it took its toll after a while. I wouldn't want to do it all the time but, in a pinch, I wouldn't be afraid to shoot slugs from a coach gun. One with a recoil pad would be preferable.

I tried out my coach gun this weekend with slugs, birdshot and buckshot. Boy, am I pleasantly surprised! At 30 yards both slugs go into one hole, the right barrel hitting about a quarter inch to the right of the other barrel. :D This happened with all the different slug loads I tried. The different loads did hit to a different point of impact, but both barrels consistently hit with the holes overlapping. Recoil is an attention getter, but the soft recoil pad really works. I'm going to mount some rifle sights on it.

I'm fine, no blunt trauma injuries, whiplash, concussion or even bruising. I wouldn't want to do an extended shooting session of 100 rounds, but that's not what I got it for. It's ideal for dealing with a potentially dangerous large animal with malevolent intentions at close range. I'll use shot loads for rabid raccoons and the like. Remington "slugger" loads seem to shoot pretty consistently in every smoothbore I've tried them in. They did about the best in the Coach Gun.
