In all reality it means absolutely zero (in most cases), but I for one get my panties all in a bunch over markings on a firearm (love some, hate some). Sometimes you run across a used PD gun or something with some cool heritage or cool factory markings and sometimes you just make it up as you go. Anybody else care? Made something up? Or am I just pissin in the wind here?

Friend has a Smith & Wesson Model 58 (fixed sight 41 Magnum) with S.F.P.D engraved on the side from back in the day when the San Francisco Police carried such iron. That's just freakin cool.

Thinking of engraving Oregon State Insane Asylum (that's what it was called back before 1913) in the side of an ole Model 97 Winchester that's been bubbed and needs a new direction in life.

The Child Protective Services 870 is kinda fueling the fire. The 590A1 is cool too.

Genuine markings, e.g. "U.S. Property", police or other government markings, or engraved presentation pieces are historically interesting, and are sometimes a seller's rationale for trying to raise the value on an otherwise common firearm.

However, creating an "official" marking, while interesting or amusing to the person that came up with the idea, may unintentionally perpetrate fraud when resold later by the unknowing or unscrupulous.

I've thought about getting the Monster Hunter International logo engraved on the side of my shotgun stock, most of you will think that is pretty corny probably but I love those books.Don't know if I ever will, just a thought...
Hombre, it's your scattergun - if that floats your boat, by all means then investigate who could engrave it for you.

I've been looking at my 1897 I'm rebuilding and my set of die punches....

I used WhiteCoyote's Detroit Police Department Winchester 1897 as inspiration/guidance on the haphazard stamping on this Remington Model 11.

Yes, I've already claimed Rack Number 013
Yes, that is a Mauser 96/98 bolt handle grafted to the REM11 bolt handle assembly.
Even more disturbing, when it's surplus 'X'd out.

And as an added bonus for all you gibbering fans of Lovecraft, I give you...
