I have a 20ga B80 with 3" barrel will it cycle 3" steel shells as they do not generate as much pressure

Go find me some modern STEEL waterfowl loads that arent loaded to the higher end of the ratings that old shotguns MIGHT be able to handle without damage

I'll be here waiting...the ammunition industry has decided that you cant shoot ducks without pellets traveling at least 1400fps out of the barrel.

He asked us about shooting steel loads from a barrel he wasnt sure about. I told him to be cautious.
I am aware of of the information you put above but it doesnt help this fellow operate a shotgun safely.

Go find any steel waterfowl factory loading with a pressure listed on it. Hint here, you won’t. You may find CIP ammo with a Max listed, but it’s just a statement that ammo doesn’t go over that amount. It could be right up against that value or significantly lower.

Manufacturers adhere to the standard, there isn’t a safer pressure. Lead and steel are loaded within the same pressure limits.

He didn’t ask about the safety of firing steel in that barrel, he indicated that he thought they were lower in pressure and would not cycle, you indicated the opposite that they are higher pressure, both are incorrect as it could be either way as factory ammo just conforms to a pressure range and you simply do not know lot to lot and year to year brands change powders, components, etc.

I load 1400+ fps steel in my 12 gauge with some at a load data of 8,000 psi and some over 10,000 Depending on components, They are statistically the same.

Sorry if it came off as busting balls, just correcting a misnomer on lead vs steel and factory ammo.
