SX4

Several years ago I won an SX4 Field in 12 gauge at a DU banquet. I'm a pump guy so it had stayed in the box.

I kept thinking that I might have the barrel shortened and rethreaded for choke tubes. I figured a 20" auto loader would be a good all-rounder and I'd have less than $200 in it.

I then found out that the backbored barrel, at .742", is too large for choke tubes. If I shorten the barrel it will be a .742 cylinder bore, which may be ok for short range shot, but would be terrible for slugs. I could jug choke it, but it would still not shoot slugs.

As far as I could find there are no commercially available short barrels (<22") for less than $400. Not a lot of options except to sell or trade it and get something else that will better fit my needs.

Any ideas?

Don’t cute the barrel. The shortest barrel made for an SX4 that I’m aware of is the 24” Turkey barrel. Having a gun re threaded for aftermarket choke systems eliminates the ability of the gun to shoot steel shot. If you aren’t happy with the gun after cutting it, you will have difficulty reselling it.

your best bet is to trade it for what you want.

That's where I got on this pretty quickly. If not for the giant barrel ID, I thought I might cut it down then pick up another field barrel when I found a deal. Unfortunately, choke tubes aren't even an option on a backbored barrel.

I'm thinking now to either trade for a defensive type gun or sell it and buy one.

Thanks for the input.

The overbored Invector Plus chokes barrels on Browning/Winchester model shotguns are designed for patterning hunting loads and steel shot. The SX4 is a great all around hunting gun. It’s light weight for a 12 gauge autoloader, making it a great upland game gun, and it’s soft shooting, making it a great waterfowl gun as well. If you have no need for a hunting gun, you should have no trouble selling it.

I'll sell or trade it later on. It's a shame though. It would have made a sweet shorty. MWG has 22" FN SLP barrels that they say will fit the SX4 for $250. I don't think they will interchange. They say it will fit sx2, sx3, and sx4 but nothing else I've seen says they will interchange.

That would have been a nice option though. If anyone has better info on the fit please chime in.

Alrighty then!

I emailed MWG and they said that the SLP barrel would definitely work on the SX4. I also found some online posts that confirmed. I don't know how I missed that before. @SHughes thank you so much for giving me that info. I just ordered the 22" injector choked barrel with iron sights and cantilever rail. Coupled with the 26" barrel it came with, this should be the only shotgun one would ever need.

Of course, I already have about 10 more but.... Well, y'all know how that is.

My FN barrel arrived today.

I had read that it might need a bit of relief work to fit and it did. It took about 5 minutes with a piece of 1/2" PVC and some old knife grinder belt. I stained and waxed the raw wood after a test for and then off to test fire.

This thing is a beast. No stops with slugs or light Dove loads. I like the sights and I think it will be fine just sighting through the gutter in the rail. The front may need to be a smidge taller. I'll shoot it more before changing anything.

If you have an SX4, I highly recommend this barrel. Coupled with the 26" that came with the gun, this thing should do it all now . I can't wait to get after some pigs.
