I just snagged my 1st shotgun, an 870 Wingmaster with a pistol grip and collapsable stock. I will be replacing the forend light with a standard Magpul MLock version, and want to also look at a side saddle for 6-ish shells. Does anyone have thoughts on the side saddles, and recommendations on a brand or model?

My friend (ex-SWAT) wants me to get a snubby pistol grip with no stock, so I can sling it on my back in a scabbard (lol, no). I’ve seen Romancing the Stone, and I dont plan on carrying it in a backpack scabbard, lol

I have Mesa tactical side saddle but decided to remove it. First concern was extra weight of a side saddle and shells on the receiver. I have flashlight installed as well and it’s already heavy enough as it is, considering receiver is steel and not aluminum.

I decided to go with combat belt holding 26 shells instead. As easy if not faster to reload for me as I have Magpul stock. Secondly because I’d like to treat the receiver for rust protection more often and don’t want to unscrew the whole thing every time. If not treated underneath, express tactical models (which mine is) it tends to rust in that area. And thirdly Mesa Tactical recommends to not leave the shells in and remove for the night as the rubber strip holding them will wear out and stop holding the shells. Which sounds as pure nonsense for a side saddle if you ask me :)

Something to consider... The forend light (Surfire) is pretty heavy. You might think that is a negative, and if you are carrying your shotgun all day for hunting, it certainly is. But for Tactical or home defense use, the extra weight absorbs (cancels) some recoil energy.
