Thought I would try to gather an opinion from the pros here about which breed of dog would be best suited in these circumstances. Temp.: summer 110 to 80 winter 35 to 75. terrain: Creeks, creekbeds, foothills, blackberry bushes (lots). Off season: Sometimes in at night sometimes out. 2 children ages 9/11. Hunting season: Valley Quail 75% of the time 25% ducks, doves. Avg. 1-2 hunting days a week. This breed should be unafraid of thick brush and blackberrysThis dog needs to be a good family luvin type and not so highstrung that if he is left out alone at night that he digs, chews, and so on. I know that alot of this is taught to the dog but I know aswell that some breeds just have to much energy for us to manage. So tell me your favorites!!

Going along with the versatile stuff: I love my Vizsla. High energy outside, curls up and snuggles in the house. My 2 and 3 year old kids climb all over him and pull on his tail and he loves it. I don't ever leave him outside so I don't know how he would do with that.

I think German Shorthaired Pointers are the greatest dogs in the world. But there are some other really great dogs suited well for California Quail hunting.

Vizlas
Wiemeraners
German Wirehaired Pointers (although they may pick up burrs and stickers more than the shorthaired pointers)

This is "Honor" my 5 year old German Shorthaired Pointer.
Some are quail hunts. Some are Junior Pheasant hunts and some are "Store bought" birds I planted and shot during training.

I was not trying to act the "expert" on GWP's I have never had one. I knew the wirey coat helped protect them from some things I just thought they would be hotter in the heat od CA and would tend to pick up burrs and other nasty stuff. I know they are wonderful hunting dogs.

Didn't think you were being an expert just wanted to add more info on what the wire coat was developed for. I have three one gets burrs one gets a few and the other gets none at all.

I love Shorthairs grew up with them my dad still has one. For me since I hunt waterfowl the GWP is just a better choice for an all round dog.

Heat is hard on any breed and you have to be carefull no matter the breed.

I had a wirehaired Dauchshund that I loved for almost 20 years. I still miss "Stymie" what a great dog!

I wanted a bird dog my whole life and had neve had one. I told my wife I wanted a German Wirehaired Pointer for Christmas 5 years ago not expecting to get one.

She looked hard and could not find one in our area. She got me a GSP puppy and it is the best Christmas present I ever got. I still think about GWP's sometimes. I just love the wirey coat! I am very happy with the Shorthair though and I think it is a good fit for me.

I have thought about waterfowling but have never got into it. I mostly upland hunt.

Maybe someday I will get a wirehaired pointer but right now I am loving the shorthair.
