Titewad Powder?

Anyone use Titewad powder? I am finishing up some small amounts of Green Dot, International Clays and Clays and am looking to change. I see Titewad is less money and the amount of powder used is less than other Hogden powders. Looks like a money saver to me. Have any of you had good luck with it? Is it clean burning? I know Green Dot hasn't burned well for me in the winter when shooting in colder temperatures. Thanks for the input. Grade6man

I have been using tightwad more and more. I bought a few small containers to experiment with and have found some excellent loads. I am considering buying an eight pound jug when my next bottle runds out. When I first started I had some problems with it migrating out on top of the chare bar and giving me inconsistant drops, but I fixed that by making a plastic washer that maked the gasket tighter against the bar. Now I get very consistant drops.

It seems to work great in 7/8 and 1 oz. loads, as long as you have a wad combination to fill up the hull. Tightwad not only needs smaller charge weights but it is also a finer powder which can cause some dished crimps with some loads. For the most part though i havent found this to be a huge problem. i have also found some soft recoiling 1 1/8 oz loads that perform unbealivable. Just ask the guys i shoot annie oakly with

As far as it bieng clean burning, I have not found it to be. This however isn't a problem in my 870's so it donst bother me. I havent had any experience with it in cold tempuratures yet, that is still to come.

Titewad is an excellent propellant for 12 gauge target loads. I use it almost exclusively for 7/8 and 1 ounce loads. It has applicability for 1-1/8 once loads, but I consider it to be somewhat on the fast side for these. (It is a little faster burning than Clays or Red Dot.)

My standard skeet and non-handicap trap load is:

STS hulls
7/8 ounce #8-1/2 shot
16.5 grs. Titewad
Winchester WAA12L or CB0178-12 wad
Remington STS primer
This load is essentially a 20 gauge target load in a 12 gauge hull, but it patterns nicely in my shotguns and is very pleasant to shoot. Hodgdon's data (2004 Annual Manual, page 156) shows 16.9 grs. Titewad with this component selection as producing 1250 fps at 8,200 psi.

One could use the Remington TGT12 wad (green) or the Winchester WAA12SL wad (pink), but I do not like the crimp these two wads produce with 7/8 ounce payloads. On the other hand, either of these wads work very well with around 17.5 grs. of Titewad with a 1 ounce shot charge.

For me Titewad burns very cleanly, being about as clean as Clays itself. It meters very well through MEC and Hornady bushings, and I've had no problems with it migrating around the charge bar of Grabbers, the RCBS Grand, or the Sizemaster.

Titewad's a good powder but sits too low in a hull for my tastes. A lot of wad/shot combos dish in unless you're willing to switch wads or manipulate the loader.

I like Rex I for a cheap but good propellant. Lofts like Red Dot or Clays and keeps wad selection more in line with published data.

I have had good results with 1 oz loads at 1180 f/s in old AA and Rem STS hulls. The crimps are a little dished in but not enough that shot leaked. I think that it is a good change from Clays and/or Red dot. If you want a change from Green Dot and/or Int'l clays then TiteGroup will be a better choice. In my case I am happy with Int'l clays for my heavy fast loads. The pressure levels are a little higher with Titegroup.

If you are loading with a MEC, get Pattern Control (PC) red plastic powder baffle. This one has a long enough neck that you don't use the rubber grommet and the brass washer. I almost gave up on Titewad because of the leakage. I know for sure that Gamliel sells them link to their website=>
