I recently purchased a used quality single barrel Trap shotgun made in Italy and imported by Stoger. Proof date stamp of XXIII indicates it dates back to about 1967. This is a quality Trap shotgun with engraving and nice wood...32 inch barrel. Gun shoots very well.
My question is where can I find a listing of older Italian Makers marks so I can determine who made this fine shotgun. The only mark I could locate than might indicate the maker was struck weakly and all I can see is the head and some of the wing of what might be an eagle with spread wings. The balance of the strike is too faint to see clearly.
The internet search I have done does not reveal a complete historic listing of makers' Marks.
I suspect this gun might have been made by a maker like "Gamba" or another Italian maker no longer in business.

If anyone known how to post pictures taken by an I-Pad please advise using simple non-tech
terms as I am a 68 year old low tech guy and I do not speak "computer"

Need a website showing old maker marks for Italian makers. Barrels are stamped made in Italy and CANNE INTERNAM CROMATE. original Boehler.

Any help appreciated....thank you.

Set up photobucket account.
Photobucket asks if you want the iPad app. Download app.
Paste a picture in your album. Pick the picture to expand.
Pick the link button - it looks like three links of a chain.
Select image code copy to clipboard.
When you return to SGW simply paste into your reply.
You don't need to use the img stuff in the post a reply header. It doesn't work because
your paste process already has the link bracketed.
Not having a mouse makes for slightly different hoops to jump through.

A mid-1960's SBT made in Italy and marketed by Stoeger should be marked as a Model 27. The Model 27 featured double underlocking lugs and a Greener-type flat tapered crossbolt , low level vent rib and no safety. The maker's mark should be an eagle with spread wings holding a shotgun in its talons centered in a globe within the letter "G".

The above describes a F.lli Gamba Model 496EA single barrel trap gun which was imported by Atlas Arms (Chicago), Abercrombie & Fitch (NY), Stoeger (NJ), Mauser Bauer (MI) and Universal (FL). Each importer employed a different model designation. IIRC, the engraving pattern on the Atlas and A&F imports differed from the Stoeger, Mauser Bauer and Universal imports. Atlas also imported a deluxe version with an old-silvered frame and a gold crest inlaid in the forearm. Mauser Bauer used Gamba's 496EA model designation while Universal named their import a Model 7212. As you have stated, the barrel is of premium Boehler steel and so marked.

Unfortunately, the usual price guides (Blue Book, Standard Catalog of Firearms, etc.) omit
many guns marketed by foreign manufacturers and smaller importers. The Standard Catalog of Firearms lists the F.lli Gamba Model 496EA as a Universal Model 7212. The Blue Book incorrectly lists the F.lli Gamba 496EA as a Renato Gamba 496 (Renato Gamba, srl is a separate firm and did not produce the 496.). IMO, these guns are under appreciated and hence undervalued.

Regardless of the importer and model designation, the F.lli Gamba 496EA is a well built SBT that shoots where you point it and should last a lifetime. Most were choked 10/10 (full) or 11/10 (Extra Full). During my last visit to Gardone, the Gamba family still had NOS parts available from their current business, Gamba Macchine Utensili.

Big Thank You to doppelflinten for the detailed answer. I now know that Gamba did mfgr this trap shotgun. Your description and markings on the barrel flats are a perfect match to my gun, as are the lock-up specifications. It is great to have this board and it's most helpful members at ones fingertips!

I agree 100% that these guns are undervalued!...mine cost only $475 including shipping and it is far better than any Browning BT-99, new or used.
