Of the two, which is the better gun? This would strictly be a dove gun. Costs right about the same. From what I've read, the Mossberg might be a bit simpler internally which I would see as a benefit but Weatherby CS is top notch compared to Mossberg's. I like the 28" barrel on the sa-08 but the 26" of the sa-28 isn't a deal breaker. What do you guys think?

Another option for a new gun...

http://www.tristararms.com/products/semi-automatic-shotguns/viper-g2-series/viper-g2-silver/

I bought one of these in 28 gauge for my wife about 4 or 5 years ago and had it fitted...stock cut and fit by a specialist at a sporting clays tournament. I think I paid about $500 for the shotgun new in box.

I purchased a second, new buttstock for $125 directly from TriStar in order to keep it "stock" in case I ever wanted to sell it. I plan to let my youngest grandson use this 28 gauge for his hunter education class and his first hunts until he determines whether hunting or shooting is something he wants to continue doing. Too many other distractions for kids, including sports at school, video games, etc.

From what I read at the time, this gun and the Weatherby sa-08 were made by the same Turkish firm and branded accordingly. The action is a scaled down Beretta 390 looking setup and seems very robust.

But Randy... Are you sure?
From the Armsan website:

Armsan's highest quality production is proven by co-manufacturing agreements with world famous brands like American Mossberg, American Weatherby and French Verney-Carron. Various shotgun models of these world famous brands are manufactured & assembled & packaged in Armsan's İstanbul premises.

Right now on the Buds Gun Shop site, you can get the Mossberg SA-28 with 26" barrel and walnut stock for $493.00, and a synthetic stocked version with 28" barrel for $432.00. I purchased the SA-20 walnut version a little over a year ago and have been pleasantly surprised at how well it fits me and how balanced it is. It has shot every thing i have fed it, without issue. Even light target loads are no problem. Great gun for the money.

Joe

Long time lurker, new member here. Sorry to dredge up an oldish thread but I have a question. If the Mossberg is the identical gun, why is it listed at a full pound heavier than the Weatherby? I own the Weatherby 28 and it weighs exactly 5#9oz pretty much as listed. Mossberg has their 28 at 6.5# which would be 20, possibly even 12 gauge weight, ridiculous for a 28. My father is interested in the Mossberg if it is 5.5# range, but certainly not at the listed 6.5# weight. Has anyone weighed one? Thanks

I own both of the weatherby models, the 20 and the 28. The 20 is my Grandson's SCTP gun and it has been flawless. He shoots it a lot with reduced-weight loads and has never had a malfunction to my knowledge. The tripe over that model not working with standard 20 ga. Shells is not true in my experience. Set up correctly and maintained regularly we have had no issues. Just my experience.

Catalog weights are notoriously inaccurate.
+1

It goes both ways. I have a gun that's catalogued at 7.5 lbs that weights 8 lbs 2 oz on the money.
