What slug/barrel comb is right?

What's the rule of thumb for Sabots in rifled barrel or smooth or both. And Rifled slugs in smooth or rifled?
Anyone try the Hornady sabbot slugs? Thanks!

There are many posts on rifled barrels and sabot loads.
Suggest you take advantage of all that has been written here by some very experienced slug shooters.
There is more info on this site than I could possibly write here.
Generally speaking you DO NOT want to shoot sabot ammo from a smooth bore shottie.
Sabot rounds of this type are intened for rifle barrels.
Period.
You can get respectable accuracy from smooth bore and foster/Brenneke slugs and shoot more for much less money.
Retail for good slugs runs a bit over 2 bucks a 5 pac and good sabots run 10 bucks a 5 pac and even more.
Do you want to shoot for 60 cents a shot or over 2 bucks a shot?
Your choice.
I have 50 plus deer kills with a slug. Only two were with sabots.
Fosters kill whitetail every bit as dead and quickly as any sabot.
It's nice to have an accuracte sabot shooter so you can make 200 yard shots on deer size game.
Too bad the elusive 200 yard sabot shooting shottie is as far and few between as actaul 200 yards shots.
Most deer are shot at around 65 yards and under.
My smooth bore will deliver under 3" groups at 75 yards on a good day with good ammo that cost me under 2 bucks a 5 pac.
Your choice.

jeager. well said.

I second what he said... although I think he has more dead deer under his belt than i by quite a stretch.

:D

Most deer are shot at well under 75 yards. In fact, my personal experience is most under 40 yards. But, then I admit, I prefer shooting closer to the game. It is not like I am going to starve. So far at least...

If I don't shoot at every deer i see in the woods. I take the shots that I like and generally speaking the deer come right up to where I am parked whether it is in my tree stand of on the ground. I also enjoy watching deer. So, I am particular about my shots.

Sure, I want to try some long distance shooting but that is a different set-up (in my eyes). I want my doubls smmothbore with irn sites for most hunting and the day i want to shoot long range I'll use something like an H&R rifled barrel with a scope.

Right now, my deer rifle for when i travel OUT of shot gun only regions is a Remmie 700 BDL with Leupold 3-9x40mil with a nice sling that i use to help shoot (marine corp rifle range style). But when it comes to SHOTGUNS I think I like smoothbore and no sites for 60 yards and less, then IF I want longer shots I WILL go to a rifled slug gun, most likely a single shottie, like the H&R.
