Just purchased a Whitney Safety Arms double Barrel shotgun with the unique safety
Lever under the stock behind the trigger - Beautiful gun in 10 gauge with Damascus barrels.
Patten Date 1894.
Want to find out about the history of the company, but can't seem to find anything?
Thought maybe it was the Eli Whitney gun co. But now I do not think it is related?
Maybe a son split off or other relative ? If anyone can suggest a place to research I would
Appreciate it. Thanks, Lance

The only place I know of that you can find any information on WHITNEY SAFETY FIRE ARMS CO is in the late Joseph T. Vorisek's book "The Breech Loading Shotgun In America 1865 to 1940" It comes in three volumes and costs $127.00 If you don't want to pay that much, I'll tell you what it says. Quote.
WHITNEY SAFETY FIRE ARMS CO. Gunmaker located in Florence South Carolina from 1887 to 1895. The only shotgun made by this firm and in fact the only gun made by them was a hammerless double that used a pistol grip lever as a safety. The action was a squeeze grip safety that created tension on the hammer springs allowing the gun to be fired. The best estimate is that the firm made about 1,100 shotguns in the time it was in business. Unquote.
After the firm closed in 1894 there were three attempts to restart it.one by a group of businessmen in Pennsylvania that came to naught. The same thing happened on the second attempt by a New Whitney Arms Company organized in Hartford,CT and a third by a New Whitney Arms Co organized in New Jersey. Whitney guns were made in three grades, Grade 1: Twist, laminated or damascus barrels. Grade 2 damascus barrels and line engraving and Grade 3 Fine damascus and more engraving. The guns came in 10 gauge with 26,28, 30 and 32 inch barrels, 12 gauge with 26, 28 and 30 inch barrels and 16 and 20 gauges with 24 and 28 inch barrels. Approximate serial number ranges of guns made; 1889-201 to 500. 1890-501 to 800 and 1891-801 to +
Now that I have saved you $127.00 and since I charge $3.00 for information about an old shotgun ($4.00 for correct information), please put a $3.00 bill in the small slot on the side of your computer and hit the send key.
