Fyi 26 grams is much closer to 7/8oz than 1oz. If you have extra lite you can just drop less powder in a 7/8 recipe to get a lower velo. Or even do 3/4 oz if you get the wads. Titewad will do the same. Do you have a chrono to know where you’re at on velo?

 

Alliant Has data using Extra lite at 1100 fps. Thats with one ounce. They also have 7/8 oz at 1150 fps.You could reduce one of these loads load a grain . To reduce the velocity. But the 7/8 load is extremely lite recoil wise as is.

 

Thanks guys but I'd really like to keep it at 1 oz if possible. And preferably a Hodgdon or Winchester powder.

 

Hodgdon shows Win AA Lite as your powder for 970fps, 1oz loads.

I shoot an equivalent of this load for cowboy action shooting. I shoot 7/8 oz. 14 grains of american select powder in an sts hull, cheddite or winchester primer and gray claybuster wad.

 

IDK what these ladies will be shooting but 7/8oz of 8s is going to do anything 1oz will do inside of 40 yards. You get more recoil reduction by decreasing payload than by decreasing velo. If it were me I'd load 7/8 to 950-1000 fps. Powder puffs and kill any clay target. I've shot live pigeons with those AA sub loads. Birds didn't know the difference, folded up. Fyi I've bought those sub loads at Walmart on occasion.

 

Trap, mainly, to start out. And thank you for the suggestion! I like 7/8 for skeet myself but prefer 1 oz for trap so wanted to try that out first for them. If it is too much then we'd try 7/8 next.

 

With Titewad powder and 1 Oz. of Shot in the 12 Gauge AA-HS hull every grain of powder reduction seems to drop the velocity by about 55 FPS. So to get from 1150 FPS to 980 FPS reduce the powder charge for a tested load delivering 1,150 FPS by ~3.1 grains.

Wherein: (1150 - 980)/55 = 3.09 grains

Hypothetical example:
16.3 grains Titewad = 1,150 FPS
13.2 grains Titewad = ~980 FPS

Use a wad designed for 7/8 Oz. (or even perhaps 3/4 Oz.) of shot to regain stack height.

And at that velocity an inertia semi-auto will likely not cycle either.

Plus at low chamber pressure there will potentially be more fouling in the bore due to incomplete ignition. And in the cold of winter there may be an occasional blooper.

 

Continue on your quest. But don't discount a light 7/8 load for trap; especially the one you're using for skeet if it's already proven acceptable to the beginners. It's good to priortize the many stages/challenge/obstacles to having a beginner achieve success. Recoil is huge for many beginners and the advantages of a light load may outweigh the (perceived) loss of a target or two.

I'm a serious trap competitor and I use only 1 ounce of #7.5 at the 16yd line. Consider that 1 ounce of #7.5 contains 350 pellets whereas 7/8 ounce of #8 contains 360. The reason for my choice is in my priorities ...I'm willing to give up the 10 pellets for the extra energy of the individual #7.5 pellet which I feel may gain me 1 target out of a thousand.

 

Thanks for your input! I also use 1 oz religiously for 16 yd trap. Though, my shot varies from 7 1/2 to 8 to 9, as I use reclaim. There are definitely some light loads out there that will help to not scare a new shooter way. Just have to see what works best.

 

An 1150fps 7/8 ounce load is a better choice because there are many more recipes, it will shoot more consistently, the recoil will be the same or less, and it will save you money. My experience with factory Winchester AA 980fps were that they were very inconsistent. A lot of pipping and popping.

 

Maybe use the 7/8 oz skeet load and go a little more choke for trap, maybe you are already choking more for trap. So SK or IC choke for skeet and maybe Mod for trap.

 

I actually use IM for trap, but have shot my 7/8 load on both the trap and skeet fields. I just personally prefer a little more shot on the trap field.

 

Light recoil loads like you’re working on didn’t cycle in my wife’s SA. No big deal but no doubles. OU obviously no issue

 

Having used a 1oz low velocity load and the 980fps loads I find a 1oz at 1150 to be just as comfortable in my 32in barrel citori

 

Just an opessivation. The winchester shells in the link . Are not one ounce. If you convert that to grains.(best way to show what I noticed). My 7/8 ounce bar drops two grains less. 399 vs 401. So to truly duplicate that load. Your really looking at a 7/8 ounce load. Believe I read somewhere(on hear) that OP had Tightgroup powder.I would try one of the 1180fps one ounce loads .(TG would not be my first choice in powder.(pressure is going to be low) But being limited to Hodgden/winchester available powders. You have to start somewhere)) But use a 7/8 ounce shot bar. This would be a close duplication of the shells referred to. In the link.
This could be done with other powders. That don't list 7/8 oz data.

 

@Debradwright, just following up here. Were you able to successfully work up a reload that delivers upon 980 FPS?

 

I have not done any experimenting yet. But plan to in the next few weeks/months. Just wanted to have some information prior to.

 

No idea the velocity but I put together a 7/8 ounce load last year for my wife. I was using 18 grains red dot. Dropped down to 16 grains. Recoil was noticeably reduced. Broke birds good. AA or GC hull. CB wad. CH209. Would not cycle in her Benelli M2. Single shot only.
