I have a model 97 and the hammer falls when I cycle the slide. I tried a different hammer, trigger spring and sear, sear spring and still the hammer still falls (sometimes stops at half cock and sometimes all the way) when the slide goes in to battery and I am not pulling the trigger. Any advice would be appreciated.

Either the sear is dirty and crudded up or worst case the sear is worn. Dismantling a model 97 is not for amatuers. The old saying is that it is called a 97 because that is how many parts there are. It is only a slight exageration. I would suggest a gunsmith who is familiar with model 97 shotguns. Good luck but it should be repairable>

the 97's are more closely fit then most pump shotguns

It is not uncommon for the hammer to wear to where it is not pushed by the bolt enough to fully engage the sear.

The easy way to check is to pull the slide all the way back then pull the hammer down away from the bolt. You may feel the sear engage even if you don't, If this stops the hammer from falling when the bolt locks up you just proved that the worn hammer is the problem.

I have seen a few 97's over the years that have a spot of weld right on the wear spot, where some old farmer fixed his gun to go a few more rounds. The guns with a family connection and the weld there really is the farmer making it work.

The 97 was designed at a time when there where all of "0" working pump shotguns on the market! yes there was one or two that had been tried BUT to call them working was even then a big stretch! it is still a good shotgun by modern standards!
