Hey guys,

Bought my wife a Rizzini Venus and it has an oiled stock. I want to make sure we take good care of it and protect it from sunscreen, makeup, etc.

From my research it looks like a little boiled linseed oil from the hardware store and some furniture wax (Minwax, Renaissance, etc) should be all I need to take good care of the stock - correct?

Thanks!

Hi CC268,

Go to Brownell's and buy a bottle of Pilkington - Linseed Stock Rubbing Oil. Don't Wax your stock unless you are going to put it into a museum. Once you wax a stock it is difficult to repair and you shouldn't put oil over top of the wax at a later date. This product was made to finish an oil finished stock and maintain it. Phil was a chemist before he made rifles. It is not cheap but does the job.

I would not put truoil over the top of any oil finish, or BLO for that matter. That is refinishing and you are just looking for routine maintenance.

If it needs a bit of touch up eventually use TimberLuxe.

TimberLuxe™ Finish 1/2 oz. — TimberLuxe

But you shouldn't have to add any top coats unless the finish is damaged, then use TimberLuxe. Just wipe it down with a clean cloth at the end of the day to clean it. I like to use a little Ballistol personally. I would avoid anything with silicone or wax.

Alright sounds like this is the way to go. I won’t bother with any wax.

The problem is that they call it an oil finish.
I am willing to bet it has varnish or a "finish" of some kind.
Like Tru-Oil.

A real oil only finish isnt as smooth or shiny as Rizzini, Ceasar, ect...
Imo it has a hardened "shell" of some kind.

I just use howards feed n wax. But if it ever came to really trying to renew the wood, I bet it would take stripping/sanding.

Tru-oil also builds up a hard glossy layer the more coats you do and if you polish between.
There is a good chance it is a tru-oil finish, so touch up might work, but I wouldnt be confident I could blend it correctly.

if you check out this YouTube link to the "Rizzini Factory Tour" and go to the 19:10 mark, you will se where they dip the stocks in "synthetic oil" which to me looks like a giant vat of something like Timberluxe (what I would personally use for touch up/repair) or Tru-Oil
