Hi,

I have inherited a shotgun, which I need to ID. So I am hoping some kind stranger on the forums might either recognize the firearm or know how to decipher the markings. New Zealand has introduced a compulsory firearms register, but for that I need to know the Make and Model etc.

Using the pinned guide in the forums, I have concluded that:
  • The U with a star above is the inspectors mark.
  • The ELG with a crown is the Belgian proof mark" (used from 1893 to 1968?)
  • The "12 75" in a circle means 12 gauge 75mm (3inch) shells.
  • The "Not English Make" stamp is for firearms imported into Britain between 1925 and 1955.
I have attached a series of photos showing all the markings I can find. I haven't tried to completely remove the stock to see if there are concealed markings. Please give me a heads-up if you think I should, or if more photos would be helpful.

Thanks in advance for any help or leads.

Just as an update, I stumbled across an old auction for something that looked generally similar described as a late 19th century early 20th century black powder cartridge military rifle (maybe something like a French Gras) modified into a shotgun, presumably in Belgium, and then imported into Britain.

Does that seem feasible?

You are correct. It's a Belgian rebarreled Gras done after 1924 (the Omega lying with the 12-75 = bore and chamber length in mm)
There should be a lettre annale somewhere but I can't see it
