I have a Winchester model 12 16 gauge that was converted to a 28 gauge back in the 80's. The Magazine tube stop lug is kind of flattened down a little and when the forearm is pushed forward the slide handle will go past the stop lug. My question is, can one re-raise that stop lug and it will work again or will it just bend down again the first time I use it because of metal fatigue? Possibly I could weld a small piece on the magazine tube to searve as a new stop lug? I'm trying to fix this one vs buying a new magazine tube Which is sort of pricey and hard to find.

Paul, thanx for a speedy reply. I never shot the gun. I bought it a few years ago from some guy at a trap shoot here in NY. His price was way too high so I said no. Some how we met at another shoot and he lowered his price so I said AOK. The barrel also had some plier markings on it as it was really a tight fit. I called him and he said no one touched the gun since I last saw it. Well I heard it before "BUYER BEWARE" I didn't get to shoot it for quite a while but I was surprised when the fore arm would go past the stop lug. Only shot a few rounds and I realized that some repairs were in order. Should I contact you thru Simmons for a estimate etc. I thought the conversion was done by a Jim Clark, Clark Custom Guns down south in Louisiana. I called him and he said the conversion rights were sold to Browing and they haven't done any in at least 15 years.

Hello Prowler67: The little protrusion found on a Md 12 mag tube as you call it the "stop lug" isn't to stop the action slide from going any farther forward. The "Lug" stops the forward travel of the mag tube when when removing the barrel assy. from the receiver by coming into contact with the mag band. Then the actionslide/forearm is pushed forward onto the flat friction spring that lies between the mag band and tube.

If you have a forward motion of the slide until it goes past this "lug", the problem is else where. Most likely the action slide stop spring, that goes onto the mag tube, from the threaded end, (it's a flat round split spring that slides onto the tube and is pushed up against the collar on the mag tube). Sounds like it may be missing. If it is there and not broken, (you have to take the action slide screw cap at the front of the forearm off, and remove the action slide from the tube to check). Now if the "stop spring" is present, and the forward travel of the forearm is not restricted then there is a problem with the action slide rod where it engages with the breech bolt. The little "tit" on the end of the rod that rides in the machined slot of the breech bolt is dis-engaging. Better have a Winchester expert go over it.

The "stop lug" has to be low enough for the action slide screw cap to go on and off, it does not go on from the threaded end of the mag tube. Regards Dave
